Background & Rationale

As BRICS expands its membership and deepens economic and political coordination, the bloc is increasingly positioning itself as a central actor in shaping a more multipolar global order. With new member states joining and cooperation frameworks evolving, BRICS is no longer simply a dialogue platform — it is becoming an institutional force influencing trade systems, development finance, and governance reform.

As BRICS expands and deepens economic coordination, youth must move beyond theoretical discussions and engage in practical policy negotiation. There is a growing need for structured platforms that simulate real policy processes, expose participants to consensus-based negotiations, and cultivate the technical literacy required to understand financial systems, trade mechanisms, and global governance reform.

Some critical issues currently shaping the BRICS agenda:

Use of National Currencies in Intra-BRICS Trade

As member states explore settlement in local currencies, discussions around financial sovereignty, reserve diversification, and trade resilience have intensified. These developments require deeper understanding of macroeconomic stability, exchange rate risk, and financial coordination mechanisms.

Cross-Border Payment Systems

Strengthening financial infrastructure and reducing transaction dependency on dominant global systems has become a key policy focus. Alternative payment architectures, digital finance cooperation, and regulatory harmonisation are central to this debate.

Institutional Reform of Global Governance

BRICS continues to advocate for more equitable representation of emerging economies within global institutions. The push for reform reflects broader calls for fairness, inclusion, and restructuring of decision-making power in multilateral systems.

BRICS Expansion & Integration of New Member States

The recent enlargement of the bloc raises important questions around governance efficiency, institutional adaptation, and policy alignment. Expansion creates opportunity, but also complexity that requires deliberate coordination.

Strengthening South-South Economic Cooperation

Trade facilitation, infrastructure development, industrial collaboration, and development financing are at the core of BRICS' long-term strategy to enhance economic resilience among Global South partners.

Against this backdrop, the Model BRICS Simulation – 3rd Edition is designed as a rigorous, research-driven and negotiation-focused programme that mirrors real-world diplomatic processes. The initiative moves beyond conventional debate formats and instead immerses participants in structured policy drafting, multi-round negotiations, and consensus-building exercises. By culminating in a high-level hybrid summit simulation, the programme provides participants with practical exposure to the dynamics of multilateral diplomacy while producing a substantive Youth Model BRICS Declaration that reflects informed and research-based policy positions.
